Hon’ble Minister for Women and Child Development,
Government of India,

Madam,

Sub: Issue of sarees/ suits to anganwadi workers and helpers

The Government has announced more than one year back that 2 sarees @ Rs 200 per saree would be provided every year, to the anganwadi workers and helpers, to give them a distinct identity, as recommended by the Review Committee.

In view of the cultural diversity in the country, we have requested the then Hon’ble Minster for Women and Child Development, Smt Renuka Chowdhury to ensure that provision is made to provide suites or the local dress where sarees are not worn regularly, as per the choice of the anganwadi workers and helpers. We have also requested the government that the colour of the material should be finalised in consultation with the organisations representing the anganwadi workers and helpers in the states and the purchase be made in a transparent manner.

But we are sorry to state that till now, sarees/ suites have not been issued to the anganwadi workers and helpers in most of the states. The sarees that have been provided in Gujarat were of very poor quality.

We request you to please ensure that the 4 sarees/ suites due to the anganwadi workers and helpers for the two years are immediately provided to them before the end of this fiscal year.

Yours sincerely

K Hemalata
General Secretary
